Улучшенные сетевые возможности

Frank J. Derfler, Jr

The key word in Memphis communications and networking is flexibility. Memphis gains important capabilities--several proven in Windows NT, such as PPTP and multilink PPP--that add remote-access functions and new ease-of-use connection features.

Microsoft has made some important additions to the Dial-Up Networking function. Users who received an updated, bundled version of Windows 95 in a new PC have a scripting capability that can automate the process of dialing into an ISP or other host. Memphis extends this capability by making it possible to initiate and control a wide variety of dial-up actions, such as calling to update a stored database or sending a system status report. The beta includes a new capability to aggregate communications links, such as two modems or two ISDN adapters, that effectively doubles your throughput. Utilizing this feature is ideal for remote LAN access as an easy way to increase throughput.

In this beta, network administrators receive such gifts as the opportunity to introduce virtual private networking on the client side using the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). This lets you set up secure links to Windows NT servers across the Internet. You can access PPTP from a number of places, including the Dial-Up Networking program and the Network Control Panel applet.

Features with long-term implications include several asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) drivers in the protocol menu and improvements to the IP protocol stack. Fast Ethernet precluded the ATM desktop market, but some applications, such as replacement of the office telephone system, might yet propel ATM. The Memphis IP stack has the ability to work with programs--particularly multimedia applications--that can generate a quality-of-service request. This request asks the wide area network for handling without delay; it's particularly useful in ATM and frame-relay networks.
