Short history of "SPOK":
The NGO was established on 10th of November 1996 as nature conservational society of Petrozavodsk state University (Petr SU), then reformed to NGO “SPOK”. Officially registered in 2001 in Petrozavodsk city (Karelia, Russian Federation).

At present time there are 6 employees and over 10 volunteers in SPOK (students from Petrozavodsk universities)

Mission of SPOK:

Support to high conservational value forests conservation and sustainable forest use in Karelia

SPOK objects for year 2006:

  1. Support to HCVF forests conservation and sustainable forest use in Karelia by means of regional protected areas establishment;
  2. Support to establishment of regional official classification of HCVF for Karelia;
  3. Monitoring of protected areas and old growth forests of Karelia;
  4. Support to regional forest legislation development ;
  5. Support to implementation of ecologically responsible and economically efficient forest use;
  6. Support of FSC certification development in Karelia;
  7. Promotion of HCVF conception and ways of its implementation on regional level among participants of forest relations and active society.

SPOK departments:

  • The mission of the forest department is supporting of the sustainableuse of forests, conservation of old growth forests and valuable nature objects in Karelia
  • The mission of ecological education department is education of civil society in the field of ecological values of Karelian forests, the ways of intact forests conservation and efficient long-term use of forest resources.
  • Informatics department provides technical support to SPOK activity

Main results of SPOK activity in 1996-2005:

  1. Old growth forests of Karelia surveyed;
  2. The ecological value of old growth forests of Karelia scientifically proved;
  3. With assistance of SPOK the Government of Karelia addressed Government of Russian Federation with suggestion to establish “Kalevalsky” national park (Decree of the Government of Karelia (6.08.2002).
  4. In 2004-2005 the social control over old growth forest use in Pudoz region established;
  5. In 2005 the inventory of protected areas of Karelia had been fulfilled, regime of forest use and protection on protected areas analyzed;
  6. 3 ecological routes and 6 touristic places equipped by means of SPOK staff and volunteers
  7. The cooperation with nature reserves and national parks, leskhoses, forest industry companies of Karelia, administration of Petrozavodsk city, Karelian Research Center, mass media, NGOs (Socio-ecological union, Center of wild nature protection, Taiga Rescue Network, Finnish Nature League, (Finland), "Urgewald" (Germany) established;
  8. The experience of cooperation in the international nature conservation projects gained.
