Using Word with Other Programs

6

To copy an OLE object or shape from another Office program into Word, use the following steps:
  1. Arrange the windows accordingly.
  2. Press CTRL and drag the object to the Word document pane.

7

To create a quick hyperlink to any file, right-click the file in Windows Explorer or on your desktop and drag it to the open Word document. Click Create Hyperlink Here on the shortcut menu.

Formatting in Word 97

8

To see all available styles, press SHIFT and click the Style list on the Formatting toolbar.

9

Word will automatically define styles based on what you type in the document. For example, if you start a document by typing in a very large font, Word assumes that you want that to be a Title style item.

10

When you format headers and footers, the most common headers and footers are available in the toolbar. For example, use the Insert Number of Pages button to create a header or footer that contains the text "Page 1 of 5."

11

Want to type quickly but get great formatting?

Use the asterisk and underscore characters to quickly format text. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.
  2. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  3. Click the *Bold* and _Underline_ with real formatting check box to select it.
When you type this: It will be formatted like this:
*Word*
Word
_Word_
Word

Note that you can change the way text is formatted when you use the asterisk and underscore characters by changing the Strong (asterisk) and Emphasis (underscore) styles (on the Format menu, click Style).

Working with Tables

12

Use the Indent and the Align Left, Align Center, and Align Right buttons to align a table. For example, if you want your table nicely centered on the page, select the whole table (on the Table menu, click Select Table) and click the Center button. Note that if you select only a cell or two, these buttons will still align paragraphs the way you want them to.

13

Easily apply borders to tables using the Draw Table tool. To do this, select the border style you want to use and draw right on top of the old border lines.

14

To quickly create a table, type the first row like this:
+------------+-----------------+----------+

Word will automatically create a table.

General Tips

15

If you want to create some sample text, type =Rand() and press ENTER.

Note: This feature is disabled when the Replace text as you type option is turned off. (To enable this feature, click AutoCorrect on the Tools menu. Then, on the AutoCorrect tab, click to select the Replace text as you type check box.)

For more information about this feature, see "Word 97: How to Insert Sample Text into a Document."

16

To avoid common typing errors, create AutoCorrect entries. In Word 97, these entries can be longer than one word.

17

Want to save some text to use later?

Select text such as directions to your home or office, a logo, or anything you use all the time and press ALT+F3 to create an AutoText entry.

18

To remove a button from a command bar, press the ALT key and drag the button to your document window.

19

When you're done using a toolbar, you can dismiss it in order to maximize the view for your document. To dismiss a toolbar, right-click it, and clear the check box in front of the name of the toolbar.

20

If you begin a document with
Dear Someone,

Word will assume that you are attempting to type a letter. Try it.

21

If you read a lot of long documents and would like quick summaries, put the AutoSummarize button on a toolbar.

22

To create your own custom control item, in the Visual Basic Editor, drag a set of grouped controls from your Visual Basic for Applications form to the control toolbox.

23

To put a border around a page, use the following steps:
  1. On the Format menu, click Borders And Shading.
  2. Click the Page Border tab and select the type of border you want to use.
